Areas of specialty and approach to treatment
Combining her knowledge and experience of Feldenkrais with a deep faith in the body’s own innate ability to heal, Holly not only aims to ease pain and address a client’s specific injuries, but also to discover why these dysfunctions exist in the body, and how the client might learn to change old holding patterns and thus move past pain into genuine and lasting healing.
Holly believes that massage is more than “just rubbing the sore spots” and releasing tight muscles. She addresses the body as a whole system, seeking the root cause of muscular tightness and pain, and locating it within the overall context of the complex functioning of the musculoskeletal system. She bases her work on the idea that “it’s the victim that cries out not the criminal”!
Holly tailors every treatment to the particular needs of the client. Techniques she uses may include:
Sports and Deep Tissue Massage
Swedish Massage (relaxation massage)
Muscle Energy Techniques & Trigger Point Deactivation
Myofascial release is a specific technique which helps to alleviate pain and promote the body to reorganise itself by improving posture, flexibility and movement by working on the fascia surrounding the muscles.
Fascia is a connective tissue that surrounds and wraps around our muscles, bones, organs, blood vessels and nerves. It is like our ‘body stocking’ or ‘wet suit’. When fascia is in a healthy state it is a relaxed and supple web. When it is restricted, it is more ridged and less pliable and can create pulls, tensions, restriction of movement and pain.
Myofascial release technique works on the principle that you must first release the superficial layers of fascia surrounding the muscle before you can release the muscle. As the gentle stretching of the fascia promotes the progressive relaxation, deeper restrictions can be accessed, treated and released. Myofascial treatments are performed very slowly allowing the body to release at its own pace. The application of this technique will feel like compression and stretching, and is deeply relaxing.
After a thorough initial assessment, Holly will determine what treatment techniques are best for you and discuss the treatment plan with you. She also enjoys working with a client’s healthcare team and has worked with physiotherapists, chiropractors, Pilates instructors and other health professionals to provide a holistic approach to treatment, with regular re-assessment to ensure optimal results for the client.
